These games are going to be more detailed, so I will be splitting up these into separate daily posts.
Continuing onto Saturday:
It’s still Friday night, after midnight, when we get out of the Con. We’re pretty hungry, and so we decide to get some food. An IHOP meal would hit the spot, and so away we went! Jason looks pretty hungry, eh?
Anyways, we have a good meal, and then we head back to Jason’s place to crash for the night. Well, that was the plan. Instead, we stayed up talking HC tactics, ideas, lists, and then for some reason, we started discussing Trollblood strategies.
In any case, it was about 2am before Jason and I went to bed; David wisely passed out an hour or so earlier.
We wake up at 7.30 to get ready for the event, and we’re out the door an hour later to be there by 9am. We get there, and fill out army lists and get our models checked for painting completion.
Before I go into my HardCore list, let me explain why I picked it. I decided that I wanted to use Lich Lord Terminus, but I wasn’t sure on what to take with him. I’d been speaking with Jason about this list previously.
Z: Hmm… help me out.
Jason: What’s up?
Z: Termy + Harrower + Nightmare + Seether + Combine + Skarlock. Fill in the rest.
BLAH BLAH BLAH DISCUSSIONS.
Jason: This is funny:
Lich Lord Terminus
Harrower
Nightmare
Seether
Skarlock Thrall
Darragh Wrathe
5 Soul Hunters
Withershadow Combine
I liked it so much, I decided to go with it. I only had to paint the Soulhunters for this list, so I went ahead and prepped. That was my exact army.
So anyways, first round pairings were announced, and we began to setup. My first opponent was:
HardCore: Game 1: vs Jason Huber [Entropy] with E-Sorscha!
His list:
E-Sorscha
- Bonded Beast-09
Wardog
Full Winterguard with UA
Full IFP with UA
Aiyana and Holt
Widowmakers
Great Bears
MoW Drakhun
Bokur
Mortar
Some other stuff I can’t recall. I may have miscounted on the winterguard and ifp.
I have Nightmare prey on Beast, as I’ve played vs him enough to know that unchecked and bonded, he’s the death of my caster.
Turn 1, I advance with Malediction for Termy and Demonaic for the Soul Hunters. I simply advance, waiting for my counter strike.
He advances, with his center staying back while his flanks fold out, trying to corner me in the center. Good move, considering my small force size. He’s good, and I need to be careful. He puts Deep Freeze on the Beast, and after he moves him, nightmare advances into charge range. I really need to bait his feat, before he pops it on Termy.
Turn 2: Nightmare takes a Ravager from the Skarlock, gets three focus, and charges into beast. I figure it’s a fair trade if I can take out his heavy for one of mine. I also toss my Harrower towards the IFP. The Soul hunters go first, and WRECK. FACE. Holy crap. Jason had told me about the nastiness that was Demonaic on the Soul Hunters, but now I got to see it. One, I repeat, one soul hunter killed 6 IFP in one activation. One killed half the widowmakers, and another killed 2 Winterguard and caused 2 tough checks. The last couple hung around for coherency [one engaged Sorscha, but got frozen by deep freeze]. The Harrower charged and Scythed, killing another 2 IFP and engaging Aiyana and Holt. The Nightmare charged into Beast, and rolled miserably, not even taking out a single system. I had 5 attacks at 2d6-1, and 1 at 3d6-1, and still I didn’t do much. Every attack rolled a separate column, and Nightmare got frozen for his trouble. The Seether ran up, so he could charge in next turn.
His turn was devastating. Sorscha feats, and kills the Soul Hunter engaging her. She ends up holding 2 focus after allocation and upkeeps. Beast wrecks Nightmare in 2 hits. The Great Bears charge and break the Seether with ease. Most of the Soul Hunters die, and Darragh bites the big one from the Drakhun. The Harrower takes some damage from A+H and the remaining IFP, but is still active.
Ok, this is it. Sorscha is ‘in the open’ relatively. The only thing in front of her is Great Bears, but nothing in my army is in striking range. And the Drakhun is in Counter Charge range of her. Ok, it’s a challenge, but I think I can do it. Termy holds his focus, upkeeps Malediction for free, and charges the Great Bears. I eat the Countercharge, and he rolls pretty well [at -13, he does 5 damage]. I stab the guy who makes them immune to KD dead, and I throw the leader with my arm at Sorscha. I deviate onto her because of the direction of the throw [I had a 50% chance of catching her]. And if not, I had another Great Bear ;). Oh, and I also feated, to make sure Beast couldn’t get to me if something went wrong. Well, she’s KDed, and so I double Boost a Hellfire with my 5 focus remaining to do a good bit of damage to her ata -2. She’s down to 6 hit points. All I have left in range is the Combine, who float through the combat with Termy, Drakhun and last great bear, and Zap Sorscha with their spells. The first one drops her to 2 hit points, the second one finishes her off. PHEW. That was close. If I hadn’t killed her, I was dead next turn. I thanked my opponent for a close game, and packed up. VP totals: I received 14 Vps [Sorscha, Beast, half IFP, half widowmakers, half great bears, half winterguard].

Impressive! I need to think about throwing my own units around sometime.

Man I love demoniac Soulhunters.
